The Bilbao Fantastic Film Festival – FANT, organized by the Bilbao City Council, continues its PreFANT series with a screening of the film “Batman,” directed by Tim Burton, on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:30 pm at the Golem-Alhóndiga cinemas.
This is the fourth film in this pre-Festival cinematic series, following the previews of “Decorado,” “Gaua,” and “Aves de corral.” Admission is free, but tickets must be collected in advance at the box office on the day of the screening, starting at 4:30 pm. Anyone arriving with FANT-related merchandise (T-shirts, bags, programs, etc.), as well as with any Batman-related items, will have priority in collecting their tickets.
The 1989 film was inspired by the original work of Batman creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane from the 1930s and 40s, and also by the dark Batman comics of the 1980s. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Art Direction, it also received six BAFTA nominations and was nominated for Best Fantasy Film at the Saturn Awards, among others. Jack Nicholson (Joker in the film) was nominated for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) at the Golden Globes.
American director Tim Burton took over the direction of this film and imbued it with his distinctive style, which has been defined as “Burtonesque.” He is credited with having launched the superhero film phenomenon (examples include “Batman” from 1989 and “Batman Returns” from 1992). revitalizing stop-motion animation (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”, 1993; “Corpse Bride”, 2005; “Frankenweenie”, 2012); adding a macabre touch to major musicals (“Sweeney Todd”, 2007); and creating some of the most iconic antiheroes in cinema (such as in “Beetlejuice”, 1988 or “Edward Scissorhands”, 1990).
Burton has written, directed, and produced films that have become cult classics, and his work spans all kinds of genres. He has also made television series, short films, music videos, and commercials. Many of his films have garnered critical and popular acclaim, winning major awards and nominations in the film industry, with films such as “Batman”, “Ed Wood”, 1994; “Sleepy Hollow”, 1999, “Big Fish”, 2003, or “Alice in Wonderland”, 2010.

The poster for the 32nd edition of FANT Bilbao, which will be held from May 8 to 16, features Batman. An image that gives visibility to one of the most mythical characters in fantasy cinema and also pays tribute to him because it's the 60th anniversary of the first Batman on television. In the FANT 2026 poster, with an aesthetic reminiscent of Batman's illustrated origin story at DC, the Dark Knight is presented as just another moviegoer in his seat, enjoying his city which, instead of being Gotham City, is the Bilbao skyline.
