Basque cinema triumphs in the main categories at the 2026 Goya Awards

Basque cinema claimed eight awards at the 2026 Goya ceremony, in an edition marked by strong competition and the presence of productions from Euskadi among the favourites.
‘Los Domingos’ was the standout film of the night, taking home five of the most coveted awards:
- Best Film – Nahikari Ipiña, Manu Calvo, Marisa Fernández Armenteros and Sandra Hermida Muñiz
- Best Director – Alauda Ruiz de Azúa
- Best Original Screenplay – Alauda Ruiz de Azúa
- Best Leading Actress – Patricia López Arnaiz
- Best Supporting Actress – Nagore Aranburu
These accolades consolidate Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s career and reinforce the position of ‘Los Domingos’ as one of the year’s key works. The film was produced with the participation of the Basque company Sayaka Producciones, in co-production with Buena Pinta Media S.L.U., Colosé Producciones S.L., Encanta Films S.L., Think Studio S.L., Los Desencuentros Película A.I.E. and Telefónica Audiovisual Digital S.L.U.
Jose Ramon Soroiz also won the Goya for Best Leading Actor for his role in ‘Maspalomas’, directed by Jose Mari Goenaga y Aitor Arregi and produced by Irusoin, Moriarti, Maspalomas Pelikula A.I.E. y Bowfinger. The Basque actor, who has received multiple accolades for his performance, adds another of the evening’s major awards to Basque cinema.
Animation once again placed Euskadi on the map with the Goya for Best Animated Feature awarded to ‘Decorado’, directed by Alberto Vázquez and produced by the Basque company UniKo in collaboration with Abano Producións, The Glow Animation Studio, Sardinha Em Lata and María y Arnold A.I.E.
Moreover, ‘Los tigres’, produced with the participation of Kowalski Films alongside Mazagon Films AIE, Feelgood Media SL, Movistar Plus+ and Le Pacte, won the award for Best Special Effects.
The strong Basque presence at this year’s Goya Awards, with numerous nominations for our films and professionals, once again demonstrates the strength of our cinema competing at the highest level across all areas: production, direction, performance, animation and technical specialties.
