The figure of a climber at a glacial cave is the main image of BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia 2025

Bilbo, 2025.05.22. The 18th edition of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia to be held from December 5 to 14, 2025 already has its main image. It is the snapshot entitled The Cave by Chamonix-based Parisian photographer Julia Roger-Veyer. This image has been awarded in the CVCEPHOTO mountain activity photography contest organized by the Basque Camping Club Elkartea of Donostia-San Sebastián, in the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia Poster Award, endowed with 800 euros and the choice as the main image of the Mendi Film 2025.
This photograph was taken during winter inside a natural cave formed inside a glacier, on the Mer de Glace, the iconic glacier of Chamonix. Several times a year, and together with other climbers, I explore glacial landscapes in search of inspiring lines to climb and capture through photography. These ephemeral caves, shaped by meltwater in the moraines, reveal a unique and richly nuanced shade of blue. Ice is a natural element that has always fascinated me. Its appearance changes dramatically with changes in light and season, offering a constantly evolving palette of colours. The atmosphere found within these glacial caves is unique, evoking the deep blues of the ocean. With this image, I hope to share the fragile beauty of this environment and raise awareness of the importance of preserving these extraordinary places.
The choice of the photograph as the image of the Mendi Film coincides precisely with the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) as a wake-up call to the world. Glaciers are responsible for supplying fresh water to more than half of humanity. Moreover, the melting of glaciers poses a long-term threat to the guaranteed water supply of billions of people.
