‘Sundays’ and ‘Maspalomas’ dominate the Basque nominations at the 2026 Goya Awards
Basque productions will be among the main highlights of the night in a historic edition, with 45 nominations across 23 categories.
Basque cinema stands out once again at the 2026 Goya Awards, with a total of 45 nominations across 23 categories. Leading the nominations are ‘Sundays’ with 13, ‘Maspalomas’ with nine, and ‘Los tigres’ with seven. The awards ceremony will take place in Barcelona on the 28th of February, where Basque cinema will once again take centre stage.
The most acclaimed Basque film of 2025, ‘Sundays’, is also the most nominated at the Goya Awards, competing in 13 categories, followed by ‘Sirât’ with 11 and ‘Maspalomas’ in third place with nine. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, who won over both audiences and critics with her debut feature ‘Lullabay’ and the tv series ‘Querer’, is firmly established as one of this year’s favourite filmmakers. The film is competing for the following awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Leading Actor (Miguel Garcés), Best Leading Actress (Patricia López Arnaiz), Best Supporting Actor (Juan Minujín), Best Supporting Actress (Nagore Aranburu), Best New Actress (Blanca Soroa), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. It has also received considerable recognition on the festival circuit, including the Golden Shell for Best Film, the Basque Film Award, and the Feroz Zinemaldia (Critics’ Award) at the 73rd San Sebastián Film Festival. Directed by Jose Mari Goenaga and Aitor Arregi, ‘Maspalomas’ received nine nominations in the following categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Leading Actor (José Ramón Soroiz), Best Supporting Actor (Kandido Uranga), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design. The film was recognised at the 73rd San Sebastián Film Festival with the Best Leading Actor award for José Ramón Soroiz, a prize he also won at the 31st Forqué Awards. Maspalomas is additionally nominated in seven categories at the 2026 Feroz Awards.
With seven nominations, ‘Los tigres’ establishes itself as another standout production of this year’s edition. Directed by Alberto Rodríguez, the film is recognised in technical categories including Best Special Effects, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography, as well as receiving a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Among other notable contenders, ‘She Walks In Darkness’, directed by Agustín Díaz Yanes, received four nominations: Best Special Effects, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Leading Actress (Susana Abaitua).
Following its screenings at the Sitges Film Festival and in cinemas, ‘Gaua’, directed by Paul Urkijo, has also received three nominations: Best Special Effects, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Meanwhile, ‘Decorado’, directed by Alberto Vázquez, highlights the strength of Basque animation, earning a nomination for Best Animated Film. The film has collected several awards and been showcased at major festivals, reinforcing the international profile of animation from the Basque Country.
Other Basque titles with a single nomination include: ‘The Truce’, by Miguel Ángel Vivas (Best Makeup and Hairstyling); ‘El talento’, by Polo Menárguez (Best Original Score); ‘White Roses, Fall!’ by Albertina Carri (Best Original Song); ‘Eloy de la Iglesia, Addicted to Cinema’, by Gaizka Urresti (Best Documentary); ‘Balearic’, by Ion de Sosa (Best New Director); ‘Zona Wao’, by Nagore Eceiza (Best Documentary Short); and ‘The Mysterious Gaze of Flamingo’, by Diego Céspedes (Best Ibero-American Film).
Finally, it is worth highlighting Elena Irureta’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Sorda’, a special recognition for one of the most accomplished Basque actresses.
